LANAKILA

Ancient :: Kahiko
Lanakila Ke Ka'ahi Ali'i - DVD3007

This is a very lively kahiko (ancient hula) number using a single 'ulI ʻuli (feathered gourd). The text describes a train ride taken by Crown Princess Lili'uokalani and her party. It was written to commemorate the first time she rode on the new narrow guage railroad. The dancer gives a colorful description of the sights and sensations of the ride from Honolulu to Waialua. Even though the mele (hula song) is long, each verse is short. An Intermediate level of hula knowledge is recommended for the dancer. The hula is most effective in a group performance, as the combined effect of the 'uli 'uli brings to mind the sound of a train in motion. It is a suitable hula for all ages and sexes.
